The Albanese Labor Government is delivering significant housing projects that will build more than 1,000 homes – right across southeast Queensland.

We are helping to make sure every Queenslander has safe and secure housing. The housing supply shortage in Australia is a problem decades in the making.

We are boosting supply to make housing more affordable. The Albanese Government is spearheading the largest investment in social and affordable housing for a decade.

This is another example of the Government’s commitment to building more houses – as part of our $32 billion Homes for Australia plan.

The Government is getting on with building more homes, while the Liberals and Greens are blocking them.

  • Today we are announcing funding to support 500 new homes to be built in Meadowbrook, south of Brisbane, which will see site approvals achieved within 12 weeks – as opposed to 12 months.
    • $40 million will be provided to Queensland through the Housing Support Program to fund significant enabling infrastructure and unlock much-needed housing supply.
  • This partnership between the Federal and Queensland Governments and the Australian Retirement Trust will deliver more than 600 social, affordable and rental homes across seven sites in and around Brisbane.
    • This marks a significant collaboration. Housing Australia is contributing $300 million, the Queensland Government $405 million and the Australian Retirement Trust superannuation $150 million for the project.
    • Brisbane Housing Company will be delivering and managing the development of the homes that span seven different development sites across Stones Corner, Woolloongabba, two at Chermside, Redcliffe, Toowoomba and Southport.

Construction is underway in Chermside, Redcliffe and Stones Corner, with building to begin in the next year in Toowoomba, Woolloongabba and Southport.

Single women with children, young people, Indigenous Australians and tenants aged 55+ will receive priority for the social housing. Key workers will be also prioritised for the affordable housing.

These major initiatives are in addition to the Government’s social and affordable housing project in Queensland which will see 490 homes built in Cairns. This project was unveiled last month by the Prime Minister and the Queensland Premier.

Labor is supporting Australians through back-to-back boosts to rent assistance and supporting first home buyers to get into the market. The Albanese Government will continue to work with the community housing sector and all levels of government to boost supply.

Quotes attributable to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese:

“I grew up in social housing - I know the opportunities a secure roof over your head brings.
“The only way to get more houses is to build them, that’s exactly what we’re focussed on delivering as quickly as possible.

“These homes will be more than just four walls and a roof. They will be places where families take their first day of school photos, celebrate birthdays and make their own cherished memories.”

Quotes attributable to Treasurer Jim Chalmers:

“We’re so proud to deliver more than 1,000 homes with these projects and make a difference for families across southeast Queensland, whether they’re just getting onto the housing ladder, renters or social tenants.

“The best way to solve the housing crisis is with more supply. Our investment will mean that the site for 500 new homes in Meadowbrook can be approved in 12 weeks, rather than 12 months – so families in our growing community can get into a home much sooner.

“We inherited a housing system broken by a decade of Liberal neglect. The Albanese Labor Government is taking the action Queenslanders need to have a safe, secure and comfortable place to call home.”

Quotes attributable to Minister for Housing and Homelessness Clare O’Neil:

“These 1000 homes across southeast Queensland build on the 490 social and affordable homes announced in Cairns last month and show that the Commonwealth Government is back in the game of delivering homes right across Queensland.

“These projects are all about reducing housing stress for renters, first home buyers and our most vulnerable Queenslanders.

"This is part of our ambitious plan to build 1.2 million homes to make housing more affordable for all Australians."

Quotes attributable to Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King:

“Housing isn’t complete without the critical infrastructure that turns it into a liveable home.

“It’s not just the 1.2 million new, well-located homes we’re building, we’re also ensuring the critical infrastructure is in place for residents to thrive as soon as they move in.

“Our investment in Meadowbrook is an example of this – we’re delivering the enabling water, sewerage and power infrastructure the community needs.”
